Updated September 29, 2026. Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters December 18, 2026. This preview discusses confirmed casting and the broad premise, but avoids describing the new Endgame: Encore footage scene by scene.
Marvel has confirmed a remarkable combination: Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, the Fantastic Four, and familiar X-Men actors in the same film. Its official description says heroes from three distinct universes are headed for a deadly collision. That is an exciting setup—but it raises more questions than any cast announcement could answer.
Here are the 10 questions we most want Avengers: Doomsday to tackle. The names and release details are confirmed; the possible answers are theories until the film arrives.
1. Who is this Doctor Doom?
Marvel has identified Downey’s character as Victor von Doom, not Tony Stark. That makes his return as a different MCU character the film’s boldest decision. Where does this Doom come from, what does he want, and why is he the threat capable of bringing three universes into conflict?
Our watchpoint: A memorable Doom needs motives and choices of his own. Downey’s familiar face may create an emotional reaction for the heroes, but Marvel has presented him as a new character.
2. How will the Avengers react to Downey’s face?
We know what viewers will see. We do not yet know whether the characters will see a resemblance to Tony Stark, whether it matters to the story, or whether the film will avoid that connection altogether. The distinction could shape every confrontation with Doom.
What would make it work? Let the casting add tension without requiring Doom to be a disguised or alternate Tony. Marvel has not confirmed a “Tony Stark variant” explanation.
3. What brings Steve Rogers back?
Disney’s D23 announcement explicitly names Chris Evans as Steve Rogers and Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter. Their presence immediately revives a question left hanging after Endgame: what does their life look like now, and how does a multiverse crisis reach them?
Steve’s return could be a brief but pivotal part of the plot or a much larger role. Marvel has confirmed the casting, not the amount of screen time.
4. Who leads the Avengers when everything goes wrong?
Anthony Mackie is among the confirmed cast, bringing Sam Wilson into the enormous ensemble. Steve Rogers is back too. Does Sam remain the central Captain America figure when an earlier Captain America enters the story? And how do Thor, Loki, the Wakandan heroes, and the other returning characters respond to a threat across universes?
That leadership question may be more interesting than simply counting how many heroes appear.
5. How do the Fantastic Four enter the fight?
Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are returning as Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm. Reed’s intelligence and Doom’s history in Marvel stories make the team especially relevant, but the movie has not disclosed their exact relationship here.
Will they recognize Doom before the Avengers do? Could their knowledge of another universe provide the key to understanding the collision? Those are plausible questions, not confirmed plot points.
6. Which X-Men are we meeting?
Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming, and Channing Tatum are among the announced cast. That gives the film a substantial mutant presence. It does not yet tell us which universe each character calls home or how their histories will fit together.
Marvel has also announced a separate X-Men film in development with a new cast. Doomsday therefore has a fascinating balancing act: celebrate familiar faces while leaving room for the MCU’s next generation of mutants.
7. Can three universes share the screen without losing the story?
“Three distinct universes” is the most useful clue in Marvel’s official premise. It suggests a conflict bigger than a single team-up, but the film still needs a clear point of view. Whose choices drive the collision? Which relationships give audiences a reason to care when the scale becomes enormous?
Our hope: The film spends enough time with a few central characters that the spectacle has emotional weight.
8. What role will Loki play?
Tom Hiddleston is confirmed in the cast. After everything Loki has experienced in his Disney+ series, his perspective could be valuable in a story involving multiple realities. Marvel has not said how much he knows about Doom or whether he can intervene directly.
The exciting question is how Loki’s story meets the heroes’ story—not whether his appearance alone solves their problem.
9. What does Endgame: Encore actually set up?
Disney says the September 2026 re-release includes an exclusive first look at Doomsday and additional footage that sets up the new film. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo have said the new material adds to Endgame while teasing what comes next.
Does it supply essential context, or will Doomsday explain everything a first-time viewer needs? Marvel has not said that seeing the encore presentation is required. If you are avoiding spoilers, be careful with detailed discussions of its added scenes.
10. Where does Doomsday leave Secret Wars?
The Russo brothers are directing both films, and Marvel currently lists Avengers: Secret Wars for December 17, 2027. That makes Doomsday part of a larger two-film journey, although its ending remains unknown.
Will December’s film resolve Doom’s immediate threat, end on a major cliffhanger, or change the universe before Secret Wars begins? Comic-book versions of Secret Wars offer ideas for fans to discuss, but they are not a confirmed outline for these movies.
What is actually confirmed?
- Avengers: Doomsday opens exclusively in theaters on December 18, 2026.
- Anthony and Joe Russo direct.
- Robert Downey Jr. plays Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom.
- Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers, and Hayley Atwell returns as Peggy Carter.
- The announced ensemble includes the Fantastic Four and several familiar X-Men performers.
- Marvel describes a collision involving heroes from three distinct universes.
The question for fans: Which reveal matters most to you—Doom’s identity and motives, Steve Rogers’ return, or how the X-Men and Fantastic Four meet the Avengers? The cast is already enormous. The real test is whether their stories collide in a way that feels earned.
